467 schools and madrassas in Sylhet district have been flooded due to heavy rains and landslides. The school’s floor and furniture were damaged, said the concerned persons.
According to the office of the district primary education officer, there are 1 thousand 477 government primary schools in the district. Schools are now closed for the holy Eid-ul-Azha and summer. Of these, 417 schools have been flooded. Shelters have been introduced in 154 schools.According to the same source, there are 107 in Goainghat upazila, 72 in Kanaighat upazila, 64 in Companyganj upazila, 27 in Jaintapur upazila, 30 in Osmaninagar upazila, 30 in Biswanath upazila, 26 in Balaganj upazila, 23 in Sylhet Sadar upazila, 17 in Biyanibazar, 10 in Fenchuganj upazila, 9 in Jakiganj upazila. And 2 government primary schools in Golapganj upazila were flooded.

However, instructions have been given to the concerned teachers to determine the damages in the schools where the flood water has entered. Once the water recedes, it will be possible to assess the damage.
Meanwhile, Sylhet District Secondary Education Officer Abu Sayeed. Abdul Wadud said, “It will not be possible to assess the damage until the flood situation improves.” A list is being prepared of how many secondary schools and madrasas have been flooded. Initial information has reached us that approximately 50 secondary schools and madrasas have been inundated in the district. However, this number will increase.
Earlier on May 29, Sylhet was flooded due to heavy rains and landslides from upstream. After June 8, the flood situation became more normal. The incessant rain that started last Monday has again led to flooding in the district.
